A big thank you to everyone who attended our Family Open Day on 30 th August 2021. The open day marked SS Freshspring’s 75 th anniversary and we were pleased to welcome over 300+ visitors from far and wide.
The day was jam packed with activities from free tours of the ship (learning all about her rich heritage), children’s activities (including rope making and knot tying), as well as a special visit from local children’s author, Anthony Burt, who read his book The Wish Fish which is based upon the Freshspring ship. Within the car park, steam engine rides were taking place as well as local charities exhibiting, Way of the Wharves and North Devon Maritime Museum. A special aerial act also took place on the ship’s deck, which saw crowds along the Bideford quayside.
John Puddy, Chair of Steamship Freshspring Trust remarked, “The day was a great success with many local people turning up to join in the fun. It was our busiest day ever thanks to our amazing team”.
“The day was a tremendous success with many new and returning faces. We were pleased to share it with North Devon Maritime Museum and Way of the Wharves. We plan an exciting calendar of events next year, as we offer more activities on board suitable for all ages. If you are a local business or charity and would like to get involved with SS Freshspring events, then please contact us here . We are open and free to visit every Sunday (throughout October 2021, except Sunday 31 st ) and then open by appointment until Easter 2022 (contact us to arrange a ship tour – we will be happy to welcome you on board)” Rebecca Craft, Public Engagement Officer.
A big ‘thank you’ must go out to our dedicated team of volunteers, as these events wouldn’t be possible without you, as well as our patrons, sponsors and dedicated members.
We are now looking ahead and planning an exciting 2022 with plenty of Freshspring Trust events. Please keep an eye for more announcements over the next few months!
